A shake-out in the City as important as Big Bang
Article Abstract:
The introduction by the London Stock exchange of an order-driven trading system in Oct 1997 will have a significant impact on dealing operations in the City of London. There are currently around 30 houses which make markets in UK equities, but this could fall to only four or five as the new market becomes established. The new system will do away with the need for market-makers, and large numbers will be obliged to acquire new skills or seek alternative employment.

Poor profits, terrible excuses
Article Abstract:
UK companies are becoming increasingly creative in the excuses they make for poor financial performance. Most companies are currently attributing their difficulties to the unfavourable economic climate in Asia and to the strength of the pound, but some are pointing to other reasons. These include the World Cup, the weather, the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, and the introduction of tax self-assessment.
