India's old crocodile snaps up rivals
Article Abstract:
Indian prime minister Narasimha Rao was not expected to remain in power for a full five-year term, as he is in poor health. However, he has suprised observers by doing so, and now plans to stand for a further term. He has also shown himself to be more politically astute than many people had realised. He has taken strong action against potential challengers in the Apr 1996 general elections. Most recently, charges have been brought against seven senior opposition leaders.

Caste war blights India's poorest state
Article Abstract:
Caste feuds in the north Indian state of Bihar are causing many deaths, and officials in New Delhi are now concerned that violence may spread to neighbouring states. The Hindu caste hierarchy in northern India as a whole is starting to disintegrate, and the very core of Hinduism is particularly being challenged by the outcastes, or Untouchables. A number of guerillas groups have been set up, and violent action is being taken against repressive landowners.

Where ideas infect minds like a fever
Article Abstract:
There is a strong atmosphere of intense intellectual activity among those Bangladesh Bengalis who are able to read and write. This is reflected in the fact that there are 10 English-language daily newspapers and 30 Bengali newspapers in Dhaka alone, for a population of 9 million people. However, many Bengalis complain that most reporting is biased, and that they never really learn the truth about what is happening within the country's political scene.
