It is likely that the human immune system only attacks when it receives signals of danger or cell damage, according to Dr Polly Matzinger, head of an immunology laboratory at the US National Institutes of Health. Her 'Danger Model' goes contrary to the widely-held view that the immune system attacks anything it recognises as foreign. It it is correct, there will be significant implications for cancer treatment, immunology and transplant surgery. Work being undertaken at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta seems to support her theory.

Controversy as C4 provides platform for paedophiles

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the Channel 4 documentary 'The Devil Amongst Us,' in which named paedophiles are interviewed, is misguided because it allows paedophiles to put forward their views without being challenged. Writer and journalist Dea Birkett, who presents the documentary, feels that it is important to know more about how paedophiles think in order to be able to cope with them. The NSPCC feels that the documentary does not give sufficient emphasis to the feelings of the victims of paedophiles.

Article Abstract:

The National Society for the Protection of Children's London Investigation Team was set up in 1994 to help protect children from organised sexual abuse. Over the last year, it has had contact with 104 children and undertaken eight investigations, achieving three prosecutions and convictions. Unlike other child protection agencies, it does not focus on abuse within families. It liaises closely with social workers and the police, and ensures that help and support is available to the families concerned.
