The new front line
Article Abstract:
Very mixed views are expressed about the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). It is admired for the great commitment of its officers, many of whom have placed their lives at risk. However, concerns have been voiced about its sometimes heavy-handed tactics. There are also concerns about the fact that 92% of its officers are Protestant, which has given it a credibility problem with Northern Ireland's nationalist population. Former Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten has now been given the task of providing Northern Ireland with a police force supported by all sides.

Blueprint of a police force for all
Article Abstract:
The Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) will undergo very wide-reaching changes if all the recommendations contained in the report from the Patten Commission are implemented. The scope of the RUC will be significantly reduced, with civilians taking on many of the tasks it currently performs. It will focus on community relations and human rights, rather than on defending the state. There are indications that Catholics may be more willing to join the RUC in its new form as the Northern Ireland Police Service.

Trimble wins: will peace lose?
Article Abstract:
Many people believe that the election of David Trimble as the new leader of the Ulster Unionist party will have a negative impact on the Northern Ireland peace process. He is seen as a short-tempered hardliner who is very unpopular with non-Unionists. In contrast, the party itself seems to regard his uncompromising approach as a distinct advantage, as he was elected with a large majority.
