Clinton was right to put the US back in the black
Article Abstract:
US President Bill Clinton has shown himself to be extremely cautious in relation to economic policy. Assisted by a recovery in US economic performance, he has been able to re-establish a balance between government income and expenditure. The federal budget deficit is likely to be only 0.3% of GDP in the 1997 financial year, and there will probably be a budget surplus in the 1998 financial year. Some observers have been critical of Clinton's commitment to financial orthodoxy, but it certainly seems that this approach has been beneficial.

US output figures unnerve markets
Article Abstract:
The FTSE 100 index of leading shares closed at a record high at the end of 1996, but fell by 61.1 points during the first trading session of 1997 following the publication of data indicating unexpectedly strong economic performance in the US. There was a rise for both the National Association of Purchasing Managers' index and the prices index. Financial markets are now beginning to consider whether policy tightening will be the next move, prompting a corresponding rise in interest rates.
