Confessions of a Worcestershire lad
Article Abstract:
The poetry of Alfred Edward Housman was first published as 'A Shropshire Lad' in 1896. It was initially very slow to sell, but this has now become one of the most popular volumes of poetry in the English language. Many composers made settings from the poems in the early years of the 20th century, and he was a considerable influence on the work of first world war poets. His poetry has mainly been successful because it transforms the personal and specific into something with universal significance.

Literary lifers: the good, the bad and the nosey
Article Abstract:
A recent film by Roy Ackerman for the BB2 'Bookmark' series presents some misguided views about the art of the literary biographer. It does not deviate from traditional theories, stating that people write biographies because their own lives contain little of interest. In fact, the main driving force behind literary biographers is curiosity, not jealousy or feelings of inferiority.
