Euro is born as ministers hail move towards political union
Article Abstract:
The European single currency, the euro, was officially launched on Jan 1, 1999. It will only be used in the form of plastic money and cheques until 2002, but the national currencies of the 11 participating countries have already ceased to exist as independent measures of national pride or economic performance. The European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany, will be responsible for all decisions relating to the euro, interest rates and monetary flows.

Policy minefield set to mar G7 summit
Article Abstract:
The Group of Seven (G7) leading industrial nations will meet in Bonn, Germany, shortly amid considerable tension over economic policy. France, Japan and Germany are calling for managed exchange-rate-zones for the G7 currencies, but this is strongly opposed by the US. There will be strong pressure on Japan and Europe from the US to take decisive action to encourage economic growth. The G7 summit will also have to address the disappointing performance of the euro, which has lost around 1% of its value a week since the beginning of 1999.
