Country for sale or hire: no reasonable offer refused
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common for prestigious Russian buildings to be rented out as a way of gaining much needed funds. The Marble Palace at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, Russia, for example, can be hired for $10,000, and an international company prepared to invest $29,000 can hold a reception in the banqueting and performance hall of the State Kremlin Palace. The power of money is also being seen in other ways. Individuals can purchase newspaper space in which they can have unmarked editorial articles published, for example, and politicians are often persuaded financially to vote in a particular way.

The spectre of Weimar hovers, but no Hitler - yet
Article Abstract:
Russia is currently facing severe economic difficulties. Many workers have received no pay for some time, and a 14 billion pounds sterling International Monetary Fund rescue package has failed to attract investors. Russia now faces another possible default on part of its 94 billion pounds sterling external debt, and the International Monetary Fund is imposing strict conditions before making further funds available. It is uncertain what the social and political repercussions of further economic decline will be.

Russia grabs its last chance
Article Abstract:
The severe poverty facing many ordinary Russians has prompted the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to agree to give Russia a further $4.5 billion over the next 18 months. However, the IMF is now putting pressure on Russia to reveal what happened to previous loans. Russia is due to pay off $4.5 billion in debts to the IMF in 1999, so the latest loan will probably not even go through the Russian authorities. It is uncertain how long the loan will prevent further disaster.
