Crushed in Suharto's iron grip
Article Abstract:
The headquarters of the Indonesian Democratic Party in central Jakarta was the target of a violent attack in Jul 1996 in which a considerable number of pro-democracy campaigners were beaten or stabbed to death. It is still unclear what exactly happened, even after a report by the National Commission of Human Rights, and there has been no response from official sources. However, it is believed that the truth will eventually be uncovered as those who witnessed the attack become less afraid of speaking out.

Looting and rioting hasten the end for Suharto
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that there is a danger that Indonesia could soon descend into chaos and violence. There have already been outbreaks of rioting and looting in small towns across East Java as prices for basic food items have risen sharply in the wake of the fall in the value of the Indonesian rupiah. These come after a period during which civic disorder has become increasingly common in Indonesia. It is uncertain whether the government of President Suharto will be able to retain control.
