'Darling, there is a dark horse.' (Michael Grade becoming head of Channel 4)
Article Abstract:
When Jeremy Isaacs took the job as general director of the Royal Opera House in 1987, chairman of Channel 4 Richard Attenborough and a small specially convened panel interviewed several candidates to replace Isaacs as chief executive of Channel 4. They could not agree which of the candidates was the man for the job so Attenborough told the panel that Michael Grade, who was at that time working for the BBC, would serve if selected. He had much earlier strongly opposed the status of Channel 4 and had advocated that it should be privatised. This was very much against the requirements of the panel but Grade managed to convince them he had recanted.
