Fitter, leaner private policies

A report on private health insurance by the UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) makes a number of recommendations and suggests taht the Department of Health ought to be taking more interest in the private market, as it has a responsibility for all health care. The OFT proposes that benefits and basic conditions should be listed?? so that consumers can compare policies, which is currently a very difficult task. According to the OFT health insurance policies are easy to market, but athere are many disadvantages for purchasers.

Prison chiefs admit security fiasco
Article Abstract:
The recent escape by three dangerous criminals from Parkhurst jail on the Isle of Wight has led to calls for the resignation of home secretary Michael Howard and of Derek Lewis, director of the Prison Service. The incident has highlighted already existing concerns about security at the prison, and the Chief Inspector of Prisons has said that the penal system is now in crisis. The Prison Service has admitted that the prisoners were able to escape as a result of 'failure to follow basic security procedures.'

Redwood draws up populist 'Budget' to woo soft right
Article Abstract:
John Redwood, the defeated candidate for the leadership of the Conservative party, has now come to be seen as the representative of the right wing of the party. He is now devising an alternative Budget, which will be put foward at the forthcoming party conference, and is also looking at ways of limiting public spending and the welfare state. His Budget will include measures to raise the married couple's tax allowance and maintain benefits for single parents.
