Does sex matter in the polling booth?
Article Abstract:
A special NOP poll based on telephone interviews with 1,000 electors shows that most people agree there would be no difference in the quality of government if half the Cabinet and the House of Commons consisted of women. However, 90% of men and 83% of women felt it would make no difference if their local candidate were male or female. A three-to-one majority of those with a preference prefers a male candidate. The poll tested policies on nursery provision, tax relief on child care, increasing child benefit and tax relief on caring for elderly relatives. The latter was more highly rated by both sexes than child care. These topics are likely to be overridden by recession and tax plans. Many women, especially younger ones, feel very strongly about issues that male politicians do not even consider.

Why Labour can't blame 'voter fatigue,' contentment or PR
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party gained only 28% of the vote in the elections to the European Parliament, an unexpectedly poor performance. Only 23% of those eligible to vote did so, but the Labour party's poor performance cannot be attributed to voter fatigue. The low turn-out, and Labour's performance, should also not be attributed to contentment with the government, as the vote for Labour was particularly low in its traditional inner-city areas. European elections often produce unusual results, and the shift to proportional representation also affected the outcome.
