London: Europe's new ethnic melting pot
Article Abstract:
Ethnic minorities currently account for 20% of the population of London, and this is set to rise to 28% by 2011. In the boroughs of Brent and Newham, ethnic minorities will form more than half the population, and numbers will rise in all boroughs. There will be particularly strong growth among ethnic groups which currently have a low age profile. London has a very good record on race relations, having deliberately faced up to difficult issues after periods of intolerance in the 1950s and 1960s.

The politicians take over the asylum
Article Abstract:
The UK government appears to have accepted that its care in the community programme fails to address the needs of seriously mentally ill people who require long-term support. This has prompted a new approach, with the government now looking at ways of providing continuous nursed care in a new type of asylum. This is certainly a positive move towards meeting the needs of the seriously mentally ill, but may not prove effective unless it is adequately funded.

Take London off the waiting list
Article Abstract:
The new NHS market system does not provide the 50 London hospitals with sufficient contracts from outside London to improve the health service. A King's Fund report suggests reducing them by 15. Resources can be spread better over fewer hospitals, providing more support for GP patients, but money will not be saved. Research and teaching functions can be relocated out of the capital.
