Don't take pot luck with your maple
Article Abstract:
It is possible to transplant a Japanese maple, which usually has three or four major roots anchoring it into the ground. There will also be a mass of smaller, fibrous roots, and care should be taken to keep the fibrous rootball intact. The maple is deciduous, so should not be lifted until late autumn. It will be necessary to use a sharp spade to dig a circle around 18-in from the main stem, as well as a saw to cut some of the major roots. A maple will grow in a pot, but will grow more slowly in a pot than in the ground.

Swoony perfume and a sunny disposition
Article Abstract:
Some varieties of jasmine are suitable for growing outside in a pot, especially against a sunny wall. However, other plants may be more able to survive the variable British climate. These include mimosa, ceanothus, Cootamunda wattle and the Judas tree. It is important to consider pot size and whether the plant would require regular repotting. Some plants require training over a fixed structure, while others need to be kept to the required size by pruning hard in spring.

Too much of a good thing
Article Abstract:
A small, crowded garden can be very attractive, but can cause problems if the plants tend to grow out of control. Many people are very unwilling to dispose of plants, and are always tempted to buy or grow more. Plants such as clematis, some of which can grow very vigorously, should be cut back regularly, while rambling roses must have old growths cut out at ground level each year. Any surplus plants in pots could be taken to a charity plant sale.
