Article Abstract:
There are a number of key questions which the UK's leading political parties will have to answer in the run-up to the general election if they are to appear credible in the eye of voters. These include what each party really means by radical reform of the welfare state, whether the Labour party would take the UK into the single European currency, whether Labour party leader Tony Blair will support voting reform and whether the Conservative party would take the UK out of the European Union. Obtaining answers to these question may prove very difficult.

Poised between triumph and disaster
Article Abstract:
The future of the UK government has now become closely linked with the progress of the peace process in Northern Ireland. If prime minister John Major's Irish policy fails, then it will almost certainly be impossible to save his administration. In contrast, if progress seems to be being made in Northern Ireland, then it would greatly boost support for John Major. Most senior politicians believe that the government will be able to last out its full term.

Income tax and the anti-political agenda
Article Abstract:
The British particluarly dislike income tax, so the Conservative Party cut it and applied greater spending taxes, which are more impersonal. The 1993 Budget shows that spending taxes will be increasing in the 1990s, which should encourage the saving and investment that the country needs. There is a crisis of accountability because of the decrease in local government powers and responsibilities and the increase of unelected agencies.
