EUROPE: MAJOR ANTI-SMOKING INITIATIVE PLANNED
Article Abstract:
Europe's MEPs are expected to back sweeping new anti-smoking moves on 14 June 2000, echoing hard-hitting campaigns originating in Canada. MEPs are recommending the introduction of graphic images such as smoke-stained teeth on packets, increasing the warnings on the front of packets to 40%, with a 50% increased suggested for the back. The European Parliament has been swayed by mandatory health warnings in Canada, which cover 90% of a pack's surface. The European Commission says that health ministers have responded positively to the proposals and is hopeful that an agreement can be reached prior to end-June 2000.

EU: WORKING TIME RULE TO INCLUDE JUNIOR DOCTORS
Article Abstract:
The European Parliament voted on 16 November 1999 to extend the European Union (EU) working time directive to include junior doctors. The decision immediately limited the length of shifts to 54 hours, a move welcomed by junior doctors, some of who work 72-hour shifts. However, UK ministers plan to challenge moves that could lead to the government having to impose a 48-hour per week limit.
