Emergency UN meeting on violence
Article Abstract:
The United Nations (UN) Security Council has held an emergency meeting on East Timor, and Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, held condemned violence in East Timor, calling on Indonesia to arrest the culprits. New Zealand's foreign minister, Don McKinnion, has stated that New Zealand could send in a force with Australian and US aid, which would be independent of the UN, though Australia and the US do not back this scheme. Canada argues that the UN should deal with the problem if Indonesia is unable to.

UN storm as Israel faces indictment
Article Abstract:
The United Nations has come under strong criticism from Israel and the US for a report, now being considered by the Security Council, which states that the Israeli shelling of the Qana compound in southern Lebanon, in which more than 100 people died, was not accidental. Israel is now threatening to withdraw support for Unifil, the UN buffer force in Lebanon. In contrast, the UN has received unexpected support from the UK.
