Erich Mende

Politician Erich Mende enlisted in the 84th Infantry Regiment at Gleiwitz, on the border between Germany and Poland, in 1936. He was a prisoner of war of the British during the second world war, and on his release studied law and political science at Cologne University, Germany. He played a role in founding the Free Democratic Party in 1945. He was elected to the Bundestag in 1949, and was national chairman of the Free Democratic Party between 1960 and 1968.

Otto Ernst Remer
Article Abstract:
Soldier and political activist Otto Remer was commander of the Guards Battalion Grossdeutschland in Berlin, Germany, when a military coup was attempted against Hitler in Jul 1944. He was ordered by Hitler to take firm action against the conspirators, and in doing so prevented an early conclusion of the second world war. He became active in far right politics after the war, and helped to found the Sozialistische Reichspartei in Hamlin, Germany, in Oct 1949.
