European cities woo latest arms control agency
Article Abstract:
The International Conference on Disarmament proposes an International Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (IOPCW) which may be based in The Hague, Geneva or Vienna. The Hague hosted the first chemical-weapons conferences in 18999 and 1907. Conventions are named after The Hague and Geneva. Geneva and Vienna house United Nations headquarters. Laboratories with facilities for analysing chemical materials are available in The Hague and Vienna and are less expensive than Geneva. The UN Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) in Vienna helps developing countries with their chemical industries and could liaise with IOPCW to provide information.

D-day for nuclear arms powers
Article Abstract:
Considerable controversy will surround the forthcoming ruling by the International Court of Justice about whether it is legal to use, or threaten to use, nuclear weapons. If the court rules that it is legal, then many observers will accuse it of being subservient to the wishes of the five nuclear powers which are the permanent members of the UN Security Council. A ruling that the use of nuclear weapons is illegal would indicate that nuclear powers have been violating international law.

British lion claws a king-sized stake in the world's arms bazaar
Article Abstract:
The UK is taking a growing share of the declining world market for defence equipment and services. It now earns 5.1 billion pounds sterling a year from defence, and holds 25% of the world market, from 19% in 1995. Defence exports play a key role in securing 360,000 jobs in the defence industry. Furthermore, relationships connected with military supplies give the UK a higher diplomatic status, especially in the Middle East.
