German lesson for euro launch
Article Abstract:
The linking of the East and West German marks in 1990 may provide some valuable lessons in the run-up to European monetary union (EMU). The German currency union was a complete failure, with unemployment in the East remaining very high. The German experience indicates that it is vital to get the conversion rates right. Failure to do this will produce a lengthy and difficult adjustment process. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the fact that a single currency makes differences in performance much clearer.

Even governments will have to compete in the global economy
Article Abstract:
The limits of national governments within the increasingly global economy are becoming more apparent. This trend has been highlighted by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, who has spoken of the need for government to come to terms with very wide-reaching economic change. It is possible to argue that government will now move from being a domestic organization to being an international one, striving to operate worldwide. In the future, successful governments will be those able to trade effectively in ideas. They will export good ideas about governance and import ideas from other countries.
