Argentina's debt worries send markets tumbling

Concerns that Argentina may be unable to meet its debt payments or could be obliged to reduce its peg to the dollar in order to do so have had a negative impact on Latin American stocks and currencies. Argentina has debts of $154 billion, and many investors now feel that it is inevitable that the country will default on its debt.

Government admits borrowing will have to rise to fund spending plans

UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has acknowledged that the government will need to borrow heavily to meet the cost of its wide-reaching spending plans. The Treasury will not be able to repay the 5 billion pounds sterling in predicted in Mar 2001, and will now accumulate a deficit of 2.5 billion pounds sterling.
