Strategy aims at endgame for Saddam
Article Abstract:
The US and the UK have drawn up a new strategy of military containment for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. They aim to restrict his military activities and to make preparations for his removal from power. They intend to maintain a strong military presence in the region, and will also continue to impose sanctions on Iraq. Close attention will be given to ensuring that Iraq does not develop its weapons of mass destruction, and links will also be established with the Iraqi opposition.

A lesson in how not to control Iraq
Article Abstract:
The British hegemony over Iraq after the defeat of Turkey in Mesopotamia in 1918 has many similarities with the control exercised by the United Nations since the Gulf war. The Canat hotel in east Baghdad, Iraq, where the United Nations is based, acts in a similar way to the old British High Commission. Like the UK after the first world war, the United Nations wishes to exercise semi-colonial control over Iraq as inexpensively as possible.
