'Fat cats' join the queue for treatment
Article Abstract:
National Health Service (NHS) managers have become the main target for criticism of NHS reforms, especially as they are perceived as enjoying considerable financial benefits. They must now make their commitment to patient care very clear, and must work hard to ensure that relations with doctors, the public and employees do not deteriorate further, according to speakers at their recent annual conference. Many managers have changed jobs recently, and this has also served to increase tensions between doctors and managers and staff.

A suitable case for treatment
Article Abstract:
The UK government's programme of reform for the National Health Service (NHS), which has now been running for four years, has attracted considerable controversy. Some people are now accusing the government of abolishing the 'cradle-to-grave' NHS by establishing a more distinct line between health and social care. There have been a number of highly-publicised cases of NHS mismanagement recently, but most ordinary people are still in favour of an NHS free at the point of delivery.

Quiet eye at centre of a permanent storm
Article Abstract:
Some important reforms have been made to the National Health Service (NHS) which are very positive and should never be reversed, according to Alan Langlands, chief executive of the NHS. GP fundholding, for example, has boosted primary care and greatly improved the relationship between GPs and clinicians. He has gained a reputation for decisive action, remaining calm as the controversy over the reform of the NHS has grown.
