The safe side of the street
Article Abstract:
Many UK insurance companies are now offering guaranteed-growth bonds, which do not pay any income but offer to return the investor's original capital together with a fixed rate of growth when the bond matures. Returns are all paid net of basic-rate tax, but non-taxpayers are not able to reclaim the tax and higher-rate taxpayers must fund the difference between basic-rate tax and their own tax rate. Such bonds have attracted many investors who are unwilling to take risks with their money.

Savings that don't lose their PEP
Article Abstract:
It is important to compare the charges levied by personal equity plan (PEP) providers before making a decision about which PEP to choose. If high charges must be paid, then the investment may never return to its original value. Some providers are offering low charges in order to attract investors in the run-up to the end of the tax year on Apr 5, 1998. Wesleyan Financial Services, for example, has reduced initial charges on its Wesleyan Growth unit trust from 4% to 3%.

A yen to get into Japan?
Article Abstract:
There are strong variations in the performance of the 24 investment fund sectors designated by the UK Association of Unit Trust and Investment Funds. At present, the most popular sectors are UK Gilt and Fixed Interest and UK Growth and Income, while the least popular are Japan and North America. Some fund managers are present both in top-performing and worst-performing sectors. Performance is generally determined by market and economic conditions.
