Fish scientists seek the halibut's secrets
Article Abstract:
Salmon farming is not very profitable so fish farmers are experimenting with halibut. At the Seafish Industry Associations's Laboratory at Ardtoe, near Acharacle in the north-west Highlands of Scotland the 15-Kilo Fish, worth 1000 pounds sterling, provides eggs for fertilisation. Halibut rest while they digest, whereas salmon are very active, so halibut convert food into flesh more economically. In 1991 about 3 million halibut eggs were fertilised at Ardtoe but only about 80,000 of them hatched and only half of those developed into fish. Scientists need to discover more about the natural breeding habits of halibut.

A mysterious killer stalks the moors
Article Abstract:
Birds of prey in the UK are a protected species. Deliberate killing holds a 5,000 pounds sterling fine per bird or egg. The North West Raptor Protection Group has detected a number of killings at the 400 square mile Forest of Bowland in Lancashire, owned by the Duke of Westminster. They have reported this to the police and provided evidence to the Royal Society of the Protection of Birds. The group's licence to the forest was withdrawn by English Nature after they reported nest disturbance in 1992. The group believes that the culprits are people who want to increase grouse numbers for the shooting season.

Love affairs with leather, lace ... and car exhausts
Article Abstract:
Dr John Money, sexologist of John Hopkins University, Baltimore, suggests that fetishes develop when a child does not develop emotional attachments and fixates on an object. Rather than making a subconscious picture of a hoped for partner, children (mostly boys) who have not received warm affection through their childhood turn their attention to an object or comforter that they associate with pleasure. This then may become the focus for a sexual fetish in later life.
