Britain's little breweries die out as young drinkers spurn their real ale
Article Abstract:
The independent brewing industry of the United Kingdom has been affceted by a drop in demand for real ale, and the market has come to be dominated by brands and discounts. This has hit regional brewers especially hard, and mergers and acquisitions have intensified, while breweries have been closed. The real ale market performed well during the 1970s and 1980s, but drinkers of real ale tend to be older people in the 1990s, and they are also seen as eccentric. The crisis has hit long-established family businesses such as Mitchells of Lancaster.
