Food, alcoholic drink and tobacco
Article Abstract:
The UK retail industry faces stiff competition as Wal-Mart enters the British market. Further competition also comes in the form of Internet shopping, home delivery services and in-house grocery services. All of these events favor consumers in the long-term. In the tobacco sector, the setback of the tobacco firms in the class suit filed against them will definitely affect UK's tobacco retailers. However, in the case of the alcoholic drinks industry, the millenium celebrations are predicted to increase demand by 13 million cases, not counting bootlegged versions of well-known brands.

Hand-rolling and pipe tobacco
Article Abstract:
The UK retail market for hand-rolled tobacco was estimated to be worth 300 million pounds sterling in 1998. However, this figure covers only the 1,790 tons bought through legitimate retail outlets. Total hand-rolling tobacco consumption in 1998 was believed to be closer to 7,300 tons, much of it accounted for by illegal imports brought in through shady channels. Pipe-tobacco sales, on the other hand, was estimated at 100 million pounds sterling, a figure that represents some 900 tons of pipe-tobacco.

Cigars
Article Abstract:
The volume sales of cigar products that include small cigars, miniatures and large cigars fell significantly in 1998 and is only valued at approximately 450 million pound sterling. The decrease in consumption of cigars in UK is caused by product price increases, growing health concerns and stringent government regulations that limited cigars' promotional opportunities. Imperial Tobacco and Gallaher are still the leading cigar manufacturers.
