These riots and killings show why I wanted to sell tanks to Suharto
Article Abstract:
It is now clear that the UK government should have looked more carefully at the possibility of selling Scorpion tanks to Indonesia, particularly to protect the country's Chinese community. It is now too late for such action, as the country seems to be entering a state of crisis. There has been widespread looting and rioting, and the position of President Suharto is very insecure. The only real option may be for senior politicians, with the support of the military, to force a meeting of the National Assembly, which would in turn authorize a National Provisional Government.
