Footwear retailing
Article Abstract:
UK retail sales of footwear and leather goods fell by 6% in 1998, with a further 4% decline expected in 1999. The market continues to suffer from upheaval, mainly due to the break up of the giant British Shoe Corporation. Footwear retailing is no longer dominated by a few specialists and is being sold through a wide range of outlets, including sports shops and department stores. Consumer spending on footwear amounted to 4.55 billion pounds sterling in 1998, down 3.8% from 1997 and is set to fall to 4.44 billion pounds sterling in 1999, reaching 4.17 billion pounds sterling by 2003.

Footwear retailing
Article Abstract:
Sales of footwear in Britain have been decreasing over the years, with customers buying cheaper pairs from fashion stores rather than shoe shops. Profits are decreasing and competition from the US threatens the British shoe market. However is is suggested that although multiple shoe stores will continue to struggle, and many look likely to be taken over, the market will gradually improve now that retailers have recognized the need to market their products effectively and stop clothing and sports retailers from taking any more of their trade.
