Freedom still a dream for hostages
Article Abstract:
Britons Jon James and Camilla Carr were taken hostage in Grozny, Chechnya, on the night of Jul 2, 1997, to Jul 3, 1997. It is known that they are still alive, but almost nothing else has been heard of their fate since they were captured. It is likely that they have been moved around Chechnya and sold on from one group to another. Khunkar-Pasha Israpilov, who runs the Anti-Terrorist Centre in Grozny, states that his men have on two occasions come close to the British hostages.

The Russians cannot win their Asian wars
Article Abstract:
The Russian government is using a show of military force in the Caucasus to indicate that rebels in Dagestan and Chechnya will not succeed in bringing about a split with the Russian Federation. The Russians will not gain a decisive victory in the north Caucasus, but they have the potential to destroy the region's infrastructure. Doing so brings the risk of the current secular leaderships being replaced by Islamic groups.

Russians run amok among the Chechens
Article Abstract:
It is reported that Russian troops have run wild in the Chechen capital of Grozny, which they have recently captured after two months of fighting. Russian president Boris Yeltsin has stated that the situation there has now returned to normal, but residents claim that this is far from true. Soldiers are said to be killing locals indiscriminately and going on drunken rampages through the city.
