From the Black Watch to the Red Guard
Article Abstract:
The Black Watch will be the last regiment of the British army to occupy the garrison in Hong Kong. It will form the basis of a small-scale military ceremony which will mark the end of British sovereignty over Hong Kong in Jun 1997. This will also include the Band of the Scots Guards and the Gurkha Band. The selection of the Black Watch for this tour of duty is officially random, but unofficially this regiment has been chosen because it will make a particularly strong impression during the handover ceremony.

HK to slaughter a million chickens
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong is seeking to wipe out the 'bird flu' virus that has killed four people and infected up to 16 others by gassing its estimated 1.2 million chickens. Traces of the virus have been found at a chicken farm near the Chinese border, and many chickens have already died. It is hoped that this move will restore confidence in the supply of chicken, one of the most important ingredients in the Chinese diet. However, chicken sellers have accused the Hong Kong government of overreacting.

Rogues and ruffians bid to lead Filipinos
Article Abstract:
The majority of the candidates in the presidential elections in the Philippines have almost no political experience at all. For this reason, it seems that the most likely winner will be Jose de Venecia, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who is being endorsed by outgoing President Fidel Ramos. However, there is strong public support for Vice-President Joseph 'Erap' Estrada, who has gained cult status as a film star, despite his heavy drinking and womanizing.
