Article Abstract:
The UK Jane Austen Society has had its best year ever, with membership increasing by 10%, attributed to the film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, the television serialisation of Pride and Prejudice, and the commercial use of the name of the character Fitzwillliam Darcy. According to the Society's honorary secretary, Susan McCarton, women take delight in the romance in the novels of Jane Austen because there is a shortage of it in their daily lives, and there are so many broken relationships.
