Get ready for the big chill
Article Abstract:
The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), a phenomenon which was first identified in the late 18th century, brings a cyclical pattern of mild and severe winter weather to Europe. In the period 1988-1995, Europe saw mainly strong westerly circulation, which brought mild weather. However, this now appears to be changing, and winter weather is set to become colder for a period. Scientists are now looking at ways of anticipating the behaviour of the NAO.

There's a little black spot on the sun today
Article Abstract:
Most research intounusual climate patterns has focused on issues such as the growing concentrations of greenhousegases in the atmosphere. However, scientists are now turning their attention to the possibleimpact of variations in the energy output of the Sun. It is already known that the Sun has darkcool patches, and it is now thought that they could influence the Earth's weather.

A thick fog with nowhere to go
Article Abstract:
A stationary high-pressure weather system called a blocking anticyclone creates fixed weather conditions. It occurs in the northern hemisphere in winter near the Greenwich meridian and in the eastern Pacific. Computer models cannot predict blocking far ahead because they use simple averages to reflect the complexity of climate and tend to return to the climatic normal.
