The centenary of the University of Cincinnati's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures provides the opportunity for giving the history of this department. The first classes in the university's College of Liberal Arts were given in 1873 and the following year there were already 8 German students.

Farce at La Scala

An Italian court has ordered La Scala's artistic director Cesare Mazzonis to turn over all of the 870 million lire he has been paid for his services to Italy's State Treasury. The decision that Mazzonis is unqualified to serve as director is based on his lack of a formal degree in music.

Opera singer Gina Cigna was born in Paris, France, in 1900. She studied at the Paris Conservatory and later with Lucette Korsoff. She made her debut at La Scala in 1927.
