Going to the dogs (and other ways to survive a recession)
Article Abstract:
Some former highly successful entrepreneurs who suffered financially in the UK's economic downturn in the early 1990's have resurfaced as top business executives. Sophie Mirman, founder of the Sock Shop, had a joint shareholding with her husband worth 50 million pounds sterling in the late 1980's, but high interest rates on borrowing left her equity worthless by 1990. She now operates two highly successful children's stores in London, UK. George Walker, former Chief Executive of leisure group Brent Walker who lost 30 million pounds sterling in 1990, now operates a service broadcasting dog racing to Russia for gambling purposes.

The mystery of innocent lives cut short
Article Abstract:
There was an average of fewer than seven recorded suicides a year among children under 15 in Great Britain in the period 1990 to 1995. However, there was an average of around 60 deaths a year in the wider category of suicides and undetermined deaths. This indicates that a considerable number of children have a hand in their own deaths. In particular, children aged under 12 are in considerable danger of causing themselves a fatal injury because they do not fully understand the consequences of their own actions.

Can you recognise this man?
Article Abstract:
Cartoonists have so far found it very hard to come up with a single image with which to portray UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. His image has changed considerably since he became leader of the Labour party, and cartoonists have still not really been able to pin down any key aspects of his personality. There is likely to be period of considerable experimentation as cartoonists attempt to develop an image of Blair as the country's leader.
