Euro gaffe wrecks Tory unity
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative government has been dealt a further blow by Stephen Dorrell, secretary of state for health, who has stated that the UK will not be joining a single European currency on Jan 01, 1999. This goes against official Cabinet policy on the single currency, which states that it is extremely unlikely but not entirely impossible that the UK will join at the beginning of 1999. Many observers claim that there is now serious disunity at the heart of the government.

Tories ready to slam on Euro brakes
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party will use opposition to the European Union as a key issue in the run-up to the general election in May 1997. It will emphasise its willingness to pursue its policy of non-cooperation with the European Union if necessary, and will show the Labour party to be too meek with regard to the European Union. Areas of conflict with the European Union are likely to include fisheries quotas and the 48-hour-week Working Time Directive.
