Skoda teaches the world to make cars
Article Abstract:
Czech car manufacturer Skoda hopes that its new Skoda Octavia model, which is to be launched in the UK at the end of Jun 1998, will give it a much more positive image. The company is using extremely advanced manufacturing techniques. Its Octavia plant has been designed using the fractal assembly concept, with large elements of the car being pre-assembled as one unit and then bolted on as one. Almost half of those working on the Octavia production line are employed by component suppliers, rather than by Skoda itself.

Rolls-Royce falls into German hands
Article Abstract:
Shareholders in Vickers, parent company of luxury car manufacturer Rolls-Royce, have given their strong support to moves to sell the latter company to Volkswagen for 430 million pounds sterling. This decision comes as a great disappointment to a group of Rolls-Royce enthusiasts who had sought to put together a rival bid. The deal will lead to Volkswagen competing directly with BMW and Daimler-Benz for leadership of the luxury car market.
