Hamish Nicol was a highly respected mountaineer, having begun climbing in the Alps while studying medicine at Baliol College, Oxford, England. He gained a reputation for being willing to attempt extremely difficult climbs, and would have been selected for the Everest expedition in 1953 if he had not been injured. He also developed a successful career in medicine, greatly enjoying working as a general practitioner. He was vice-president of the Alpine Club between 1986 and 1987 and president of the Climbers Club from 1972 to 1975.

Peter Livesey

Mountaineer Peter Livesey developed great speed, strength and stamina at an early age. He became one of the best cavers in the world, and only began mountaineering in his late 20s. He gained a strong reputation for his dedicated approach to training and for his great mental control. He free-climbed some of the great walls of the Dolomites, and also made the second ascent of the 5,000 ft-high Troll Wall in Norway.
