Joseph Machlis
Article Abstract:
Writer and musicologist Joseph Machlis had become a competent pianist by the time he was a teenager. He studied at the Institute of Musical Education, but found himself more attracted to writing. He gained a degree in English at Columbia University, where he also attended the seminars of musicologist Paul Henry Lang. He gained a teaching post at Queens College in 1938, and produced a book based on his course, 'The Enjoyment of Music.' He also became known for other books and for his translations of opera libretti.

Peter Crossley-Holland
Article Abstract:
Musicologist and composer Peter Crossley-Holland was born in London, England, in 1916. He studied Physiology and Music at Oxford University, England, while also taking composition lessons. He joined the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts in 1943.

Francois Lesure

Musicologist, historian and music librarian Francois Lesure was born in Paris, France, in 1923. He studied musicology at the Paris Conservatoire and became conservateur in the Music Dept of the Bibliotheque Nationale in 1950.
