Happy birthday, dear Cardinal Hume
Article Abstract:
Pain widens the experience and affects all the emotions, according to composer Roxanna Panufnik, who only began composing seriously after the death of her father in 1991. She acknowledges that her music is unusual, and also sees it as being emotionally intense. She is particularly interested in chamber music and the voice, and usually begins with words, which she then puts to music. Her most recent project has been 'Westminster Mass,' a piece marking the 75th birthday of Cardinal Hume, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales.

The savage truth behind the Cardinal's smile
Article Abstract:
Right-wing English Catholics have expressed strong support for US television evangelist Mother Angelica, who has very conservative views on issues such as contraception and sex education. They had hoped that their stance would be validated by Cardinal Basil Hume, the Primate of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Instead, he has been very critical of Mother Angelica, stating that teachers and writers deserve help and understanding, not the condemnation which has come from those who share Mother Angelica's views.
