Harmonisation of taxes: Is this the most dangerous issue for Europe?
Article Abstract:
Those responsible for planning the single European market have for some time been aiming for the harmonization of European tax rates. They believe that significant differences in tax rates could have a negative impact on the single market. This issue has begun to become more controversial as German Finance Minister Oskar Lafontaine makes it clear that the German government will place strong emphasis on tax harmonization during its presidency of the European Union, which begins in Jan 1999. Tax harmonization will present significant challenges for UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, who does not wish to appear too anti-European.

Family values, Labour style
Article Abstract:
The influence of Cherie Booth, wife of Labour party leader Tony Blair, could be used by the Conservative party to political advantage. She clearly has a strong interest in politics, and once even tried to be elected as a Labour party candidate. She has been greatly influenced by her very strong mother, and believes firmly in the importance of the family. Her Catholic background, rather than her political beliefs, may eventually be the strongest influence on her husband.

From Bracknell to Monmouthshire, the nation calls time on the Tories
Article Abstract:
The recent local elections were a disaster for the Conservative party, which lost many tradtionally strong seats and was forced into third place by the Liberal Democrats. The party still holds a very small core of councils around Greater London, but elsewhere has only small isolate pockets of support. The Labour party has hailed the results as an indication that it has gained the widespread support of ordinary voters.
