Drummond Matthews
Article Abstract:
Drummond Matthews was a geologist who helped develop plate tectonic theory which is used in assessing volcanic risk as well as in exploration for oil. He studied plate boundaries on the ocean floor between 1967 and 1972 and later moved from his marine research post at Cambridge University to study the continental crust. The British Institutions Reflection Profiling Syndicate (Birps) was led by Matthews and developed deep crustal imaging standards. Matthews retired in 1990 and both his marine geology research groups and Birps prospered after he left.
