Has AS Byatt lost the plot?
Article Abstract:
Novelist Antonio Byatt originally came to public attention with works which had a high intellectual content. She took this approach in order to appear modern, and also to compete with her sister, Margaret Drabble, who was much more well known as a novelist. She won the Booker Prize in 1990, and soon became more famous than her sister. This gave her more confidence, but presented problems when it came to writing a new novel. This novel, entitled 'Babel Tower,' is heavy going in places, and contains a number of superfluous characters.

Pop goes the writer
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for novelists to acknowledge the impact of pop music on modern society. US writer Pagan Kennedy's new novel 'The Exes,' for example, charts the rise of an alternative-rock band, while pop music has also featured in recent novels by Alan Warner, Irvine Walsh and Robert Newman. There is now a growing sense of fiction and pop music establishing positive links. Alan Warner, Nick Hornby and Pagan Kennedy have appropriated pop culture in a unique and mutually distinctive way.

In the grip of Possession
Article Abstract:
An artist often develops his or her ideas over many years from a single concept before the final form of the work is fixed. This was the case with 'Possession,' a novel by A.S. Byatt. She started with a basic shape, to which colour and further form was then added over subsequent years. At certain stages, decisive choices are made, but the rest of the work evolves at its own pace, in line with the writer's experiences and thoughts.
