Children suffering from cerebral palsy who are pupils at the school run by Scope, the charity, Meldreth Manor, School, Hertfordshire, UK, are using computers and the Internet to communicate. One of the pupils, Martin, spent twelve months learning to use a pictorial language, Rebus, which assists those with problems with words, speech or writing. Rebus has 3,500 symbols stored on a microcomputer by means of the compuer program 'Working With Symbols', and Switch Clicker, another program, displays the symbols.

Gateway 2000 markets, manufactures, sells, ships and supports PCs from its single operation in Dublin, Ireland. It has seen very strong growth since its creation in 1985, and now has turnover of $3.7 billion a year. It employs 800 people, and is creating a further 1,2000. It undertakes direct sales worth with customers in Europe, and this has reaped strong dividends, with three-quarters of all customers ordering equipment with features beyond the company's basic models.
