Classical scholar Helen Thomas gained a First in Classics and a starred First in Archaeology at Girton College, Cambridge, England. She held a Studentship at the British School in Athens, Greece, between 1935 and 1938, and joined the cipher office at the British Legation in Athens on the outbreak of the second world war. She was appointed librarian of the British School in 1946. She contributed to work on the treasures of Mycenae, Ithaca and the early houses of Minoan civilization.

Philip Vellacott
Article Abstract:
Classical scholar Philip Vellacott read classics under Stanley Vernon-Jones at Magdalene College, Cambridge, England, where he was also influenced by Michael Ramsey, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury, and poet and literary critic William Empson. He became a teacher, and undertook a great deal of voluntary work during the second world war. He retired in 1967, but remained involved in writing and lecturing work.

Article Abstract:
Scholar of Greek and Ancient Philosophy Allan Coxon was born in Derby, England, in 1909. He studied at Oriel College, Oxford, England, and in 1933 joined the Greek Dept at Edinburgh University, Scotland. He became particularly known for his work on the poet and philosopher Parmenides.
