High heels and hi-tech in a brutal fictional world
Article Abstract:
Cyberpunk is a realistic type of science fiction using developments of the nineteen-eighties and nineteen-nineties such as cosmetic surgery, artificial intelligence, holograms and information technology. Cyberpunks are futuristic hippies or teddy boys, intending to subvert the multinational corporations through their computers. Few cyberpunk novels have strong female characters, but 'Body of Glass' by Marge Piercy, published in March 1992, is set in 2050 with a heroine, Shira. Piercy discusses the meaning of immortality in relation to human-simulating machines, ethics and implications of genetic engineering and portrays women using technology creatively.

My life as a fictional character
Article Abstract:
French artist Sophie Calle spent a week seeking to improve life in New York, NY, on the instructions of novelist Paul Auster. She had requested these instructions from Auster, whose 1992 novel 'Leviathan' features a character broadly based on Calle herself. She spoke to strangers, distributed food and cigarettes and cultivated a phone booth. This new work is lighter in tone and more playful than Calle's previous projects. However, like her other projects it involved some risk on the part of the artist.

Dark clouds gather over a brutal business
Article Abstract:
The recent case of boxer Gerald McClellan, who had to undergo brain surgery after a match against Nigel Benn, has given ammunition to opponents of boxing. However, many observers believe that it would be impossible to ban boxing, as there would always be men prepared to box in secret. Boxers are proud men with great respect for each other, and would be a great loss to society.
