Thumb-sucking is healthy; the family is not
Article Abstract:
Dr Benjamin Spock, 88, has a new version of his famous book 'Baby and Child Care' which has sold over 40 million copies in 37 translations since 1946. In the 1990s in America, most families have two working parents, one parent or are step-families. Dr Spock says that society's emphasis on work reflects badly on the family with marriage break-ups, stresses and strains. Children's physical ill-health and child abuse have increased since 1982. Parents should be politically active and bring their children up to help others, improve human relationships and create world security.

Five miss out when an adult's always there
Article Abstract:
Authors have problems creating realistic settings for children's adventures in the 1990s, as children have less freedom than those in the 1940s and 1950s when books such as 'Swallows and Amazons' and the 'Famous Five' were popular. Parents in the 1990s feel obliged to take their children to activities and on expeditions, and to protect their children from molesters and murderers. Adults are always around, restricting the scope for adventure, emotional shock and experience of life.

Dying will never be the same again
Article Abstract:
Euthanasia may start to become an important moral issue in the UK, where it has until recently not received much attention. It is possible that the confessions by doctors David Moor and Michael Irwin that they have helped many patients to die will spark off a strong rise in support for euthanasia among ordinary people, as was the case in the US. Supporters of euthanasia are now a strong political force in the US, and this may become the case in the UK too.
