Hitchcock's other leading lady
Article Abstract:
Filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock cast his daughter Patricia in three films: 'Stagefright,' 'Strangers on a Train' and 'Psycho.' Hitchcock does not appear to have been motivated by nepotism in deciding to cast his daughter, and she also believes that there were no psychological motives on her father's part. However, it seems that in each film she served in some way as her father's surrogate. Hitchcock was almost certainly very well aware of the likely effect of casting his own daughter.

The hand that rocks the cradle
Article Abstract:
Working with young directors is very enjoyable, according to film editor Ann Coates. She feels that young directors are open to new ideas. She obtained her first editor's credit for the 1952 film 'The Pickwick Papers,' but did not really become established until she spent 22 months working on 'Lawrence of Arabia.' She now likes to work on one film a year, taking a few months off in between to travel. She has become quite selective about the films on which she works.

Hollywood: the real war zone
Article Abstract:
Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey regards his role as identifying the photographic focus of a script. He emphasizes that he avoids imposing a specific style on a film. Three of his films, 'The War Zone,' 'I Could Read the Sky' and 'The Big Tease,' are being shown at the 1999 Edinburgh Film Festival. He will also stage a special one-off event in the film festival delegates' centre on Aug 21, 1999.
