Hogan Bassey

Boxer Okon Bassey Asuquo, known as Hogan Bassey, turned professional while still at school. He won and lost the Nigerian flyweight title in 1949, and by 1951 was Nigerian and West African bantamweight champion. He made his debut in the UK in Jan 1952. He won the British Empire featherweight title in Nov 1955, and retained the title in Apr 1957. He defended the world championship successfully in Apr 1958, and increased his profile in the US through his victory over Willie Pep in Sep 1958.

Willie Pastrano

Boxer Willie Pastrano began training as an amateur boxer as a teenager in order to lose weight. He linked up with Italian-American trainer Angelo Dundee, and this partnership lasted throughout his career. He won the world light-heavyweight title in 1963, and retired at the age of 31 when he lost this title in 1965. He was never able to make a comeback, and eventually became involved in youth work in New Orleans. He settled down into a relatively quiet family life.

Bruce Woodcock
Article Abstract:
Boxer Bruce Woodcock boxed in amateur clubs as a teenager. He boxed for England in the 1939 European Championships, winning the ABA light-heavyweight title, and turned professional in 1942. He became British and Empire heavyweight champion in Jul 1945 and was particularly successful in 1946. He was badly injured in 1947, but won a number of fights in 1948. His career ended in 1951, and he kept a pub for many years in Doncaster, England.
