Gordon McMaster
Article Abstract:
Horticulturalist and politician Gordon McMaster obtained a City and Guilds in Horticulture from Woodburn House Further Education Centre, part of the West of Scotland Agricultural College, and later became a lecturer in horticulture at Langside College. At the age of 22, he became the youngest chairman of any local council in Scotland, and became leader of Renfrew District Council in 1988. He became Labour MP for Strathclyde in 1988, and gained a strong reputation for representing the rights of disabled people.

Bert Gough
Article Abstract:
Coalminer and politician Robert Gough began his working life at the age of 14. He gained trade union and Labour party responsibilities in his late teens, and in 1956 was elected to the Buckhaven and Methil Town Council. In 1966 he became the youngest Provost ever of Buckhaven and Methil, and was Convenor of Fife Regional Council between 1978 and 1996. He believed firmly that the elderly should not become housebound, and was a pioneer in the introduction of free concessionary travel for the elderly.

Lord Mellish
Article Abstract:
Trade union official and politician Robert Mellish began his working life at the office of the newly formed Transport and General Workers' Union. He became a major in the Royal Engineers during the second world war, and in 1946 became Labour MP for Rotherhithe, London, England. He became Parliamentary Private Secretary to Minister of Supply George Strauss in 1950, and in 1956 became London Labour Regional Party Chmn.
